Lil’wat Forestry Ventures recently started logging in areas RY0063 and RY0064, focusing on implementing selective tree retention strategies.
With this work, our goal is to leave between 10 and 50 stems per hectare. This approach will help retain moisture, provide essential habitat for wildlife, and encourage the remaining trees to naturally help regenerate the area. While logging and roadwork are underway in these blocks, we are not broadly applying cultural burning in RY0063 and RY0064 at this time.
A lot of these stands are primarily second-growth forests which can be quite dense, and thinning will help reduce vertical fuels and tightness, potentially slowing down wildfires and keeping them on the ground.
For Woodlot 49 Block 24x, near Owl Ridge, work will commence this week:
- Pre-work likely started earlier this week.
- Road building will commence between Tuesday and Wednesday and is expected to take about 2 days. A grader will do some tidy-up later in the week.
- The Feller Buncher tree falling work may potentially start Monday, April 28th, and is expected to take about 7 days.
- Chucking/Skidding is estimated to start around Monday, May 5th.
- The yarding and processing phase is estimated to run from May 5th to May 14th.
- Hauling is estimated to start around May 12th and should take around 10 days, potentially finishing by May 23rd. We will ensure this hauling takes school bus schedules in mind.
We’re excited to continue this work, balancing ecological health, safety, and community benefits through careful planning and implementation!
